✦ Synopsis


A device which can be used to measure the volume fraction and the average drop size of the dispersed phase in a liquid-liquid system is described. Its principle is based on the difference between the velocities of transmission of acoustic waves in the two liquids. Volume fraction is found from the shift in phase of waves of fixed frequency traversing a path of fixed length through the dispersion and drop size is deduced from the variance of this phase shift.

The distribution of drop diameters produced in the vicinity of a turbine impeller has been determined in a dilute iso-octane + salt water emulsion, using an electronic particle counter. The experimental distribution data have been fitted to the Schwarz-Bezemer equation with good agreement. The resul
