✦ Synopsis

We characterise all non-degenerate homomorphisms from the multiplicative semigroup of all 2 Â 2 matrices over an arbitrary ®eld to the semigroup of 3 Â 3 matrices over the same ®eld. In the case of a ®eld of real numbers every irreducible non-degenerate homomorphism is a conjugation of the symmetric square.
