โฆ Synopsis
The flextensional transducer is one of the more efficient, low frequency underwater projectors. High power output is achieved by the large volume displacement produced by the flexural resonance of the elliptical shell. Taking advantage of their normal operational behaviour, this paper presents a simplified analytical model of flextensional transducers. The model is based on the assumptions of elliptical beam bending and cylindrical shell radiation similar to the mathematical model presented by G. A. Brigham in 1974. The method of solution is revised according to the special features of the transducer to give a substantially simpler numerical solution which is suitable for implementation on desktop computers. Numerical results of the model were compared with the numerical and experimental results reported by Brigham and the author's own finite element modelling results.
