✦ Synopsis

Direct Inlet Mass Spectrometry (DIMS) is used for studying mixtures of PVC with thermal stabilizers. The stabilizers used, Ba/Cd stearates and dibasic lead phosphite, have different ways of action that are followed successfully by DIMS. The method is used particularly to compare the effectiveness of these stabilizers at 160', 200', 240 used in ratios of 2.5 and 5.0 parts per hundred of PVC. The qualitative and quantitative composition of the volatile products during the thermal treatment with or without stabilizers are measured and discussed.

Thermal degradation of PVC at 180 ° in air in the presence of Ba and Cd sterarates and of their combination has been studied. In the presence of Cd stearate, dehydrochlorination proceeds at many sites giving rise to relatively short polyenes, in the presence of Ba stearate, the number of degradation

Thermal degradation at 180 ° in air of PVC stabilized with an equimolar mixture of Ba and Cd stearates has been studied. The "unreacted" stearates were separated by filtering tetrahydrofuran solutions of samples. The filtration and thermal degradation were examined by means of infrared spectroscopy
