## Abstract An ion formed by loss of 56 mass units from the molecular ion is often seen in mass spectra of trimethylsilyl ethers of C~19~ and C~21~ steroids having a 3β‐hydroxy‐Δ^5^ structure and an oxo group at C‐17 or C‐20. The nature of this fragment was investigated by the use of perdeuteriotri

✦ Synopsis
The mass spectra of the trimethylsilyl derivatives of 22 3P-hydroxy-A5-pregnenes have been examined with the aid of deuterium labelling and high resolution mass measurements. The influence of additional hydroxy and keto substituents on the characteristic fragment ions is discussed and fragmentation mechanisms for several ions characteristic of hydroxylation at specific sites (11 and 16) are proposed.
