✦ Synopsis

The Tynthesis of long chain 6-0x0 and 7-0x0 aliphatic acids is undertaken in connection with one of the industrial process developments at our laboratory. Derivatisation of these long chain 0x0 acids and further chemical modification led to potential oil field chemicals like anti-corrosives, bictericides. scale inhibitors etc. In this paper, the mass spectra of a series of 0x0 acids from undecanoic acid to tetracosanoic acid are reported. These 0x0 acids show characteristic fragmentation patterns. In the total series of 0x0 acids from undecanoic acid to tetracosanoic acid investigated by us. a McLafferty rearrangement is not only observed with the involvement of the 0x0 group, but also preferentially it is the alkyl chain-side hydrogen on the y-carbon atom that is involved in the rearrangcment in all the cases. The intensity of the rearranged fragment ion increased as the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain increased and became a base peak in compounds with carbon numbers greater than 20.

Long chain vinyl esters of 6-and 7-oxoaliphatic acids are synthesized as intermediate monomers for the preparation of poly 6-0x0 and 7-OX0 vinyl esters. These comblike polymers have wide applications as fluidity improvers. Detailed characterization of all the intermediates is done by IR, PMR, and MS
