✦ Synopsis


Chloro(tetraphenylchlorin)manganese(III) has been synthesized and characterized. Vkible and infrared spectra of the complex have been measured and band assignments made. The Mn(III) --, Mn(II) reduction potential, &It = -0.15 v (vs SCE), of the complex in dimethylformamide was determined polarographically. The visible spectrum of Mn( II) complex was record& Although the properties are consistent with the general model proposed for Mn(II1) porphyrins, quantitative di&rences exist between the chlorin and porphyrin complexes. These can be interpreted to conclude that there is weaker in-plane bonding and stronger axial bonding in the chlorin derivatives.
