. One reason why a good football match is so attractive to many is that it is more than just a game . . . it is about the management of change.

. In this article, the author attempts to develop a systematic method for change management, and to apply the method to solve the football match penalty shoot-out problem.

. In the semi-®nal World Cup 90 match, England lost to West Germany in the penalty shoot-out. Six years later, the same result was repeated in Euro 96. The author identi®es the real cause of the outcome.

. The lessons learnt are not only important for the World Cup 98 in particular, but also for managing change in general.
