โœฆ Synopsis


A case of malignant teratoma arising in the ethmoid sinus of a 39-year-old man is presented. I t led to the patient's death within 3 months after the onset of nasal symptoms. Histologically, the lesion contained young squamous, glandular and neural elements with abundant smooth muscle. Focal areas resembling esthesioneuroblastoma were present. The authors believe it to be the first documented case of a malignant teratoma arising in this location.

XTRAGONADAL TERATOMAS IN ADULTS, ASIDE

E from those arising in the mediastinum, are rare tumors. A malignant tumor of this nature that originated in the area of the ethmoid sinus is the subject of this report. We believe it to be the first documented case of its type.

CASE REPORT

FE (#285025), a 39-year-old Caucasian man, entered the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on June 25, 1966 presenting with right nasal obstruction and bloody discharge from the right nostril of 3-week duration. For one week prior to admission, he had experienced a vague sensation of discomfort in the right maxillary teeth and forehead. Past medical history was significant only in that the patient had had allergic rhinitis due to pollens for many years.

On physical examination the patient was in no acute distress. The right nasal fossa was occupied by a large reddish-purple tumor mass that filled approximately two thirds of the space and was attached to the area of the middle turbinate and above.
