This Malay language guide isof assistance incarrying on simple conversations in Malay and is used in conjunctionwith records. Malay is spoken by people inMalaya, Sumatra, Java, andBorneo and is widely used as a trade language throughout theNetherlands East Indies. The variety of Malay used in theguide(called Low, Bazaar, or Market Malay) is the everyday languageor theordinary people. The pronunciation used in the guide, whichis thatused in Java, will be understood wherever Malay is spoken.All thewords and phrases are written in a simplified spelling whichis readlike English. Useful words and phrases include greetingsand generalphrases, location, directions, numbers, asking for things,money,tuYing things, time, and other useful phrases. Additional expressionsare included which the learner will be able to pronounce witnouthearing them. The learner will also be able to formsentences of niscwn by using the section called "fill-in sentences." Importantsignsthat the learner/tourist will want to recognize andan alphameticalword list are included.
