Albanian is spoken by more than one million people in Albania and the neighboring sections of Yugoslavia. This Language Guide will enable you to ask direc tions, buy things or order a meal in these regions. Knowing a little Albanian will also help you get along with the people, for they will naturally be pleased to see a stranger showing enough interest in them to try to speak their language.

There are variations in the way Albanian is pro- nounced in different regions, just as there are varia- tions in the way English is spoken in different parts of the United States. The pronunciation given on the phonograph records will be understood wherever Albanian is spoken, but it is best to try to speak like the people in the region in which you happen to be.
