✦ Synopsis

Rare-earth ferroborates RFe 3 (BO 3 ) 4 Quadrupole moments a b s t r a c t Recent experimental data for magnetostriction in the rare-earth (RE) ferroborates RFe 3 (BO 3 ) 4 with R ΒΌ Pr and Tb are discussed from a theoretical point of view. Multipole moments of RE ions are calculated in the framework of a crystal-field model for the RE ion and the molecular-field approximation. Quadrupole approximation is shown to be sufficient for interpretation of data for longitudinal magnetostriction at the magnetic field along the trigonal axis. Parameters of PrFe 3 (BO 3 ) 4 are deduced when accounting for the experimental magnetization curves that manifest a spin-flop transition.

Pb2Sr2Ceo.sCao.sCu30 s and Pb2Sr2Lnl\_xCaxCu308 with Ln =Pr, Tb and x= 0.0 and 0.5 have been studied by rare-earth L ILm edge XANES spectroscopy. The spectra of Pb 2 Sr2Ceo.sCao.sCu 308 show that Ca doping of Pb 2 Sr2CeCu 308 causes a partial oxidation of Ce. Analysis within the framework of the And
