✦ Synopsis
Pb2Sr2Ceo.sCao.sCu30 s and Pb2Sr2Lnl_xCaxCu308 with Ln =Pr, Tb and x= 0.0 and 0.5 have been studied by rare-earth L ILm edge XANES spectroscopy. The spectra of Pb 2 Sr2Ceo.sCao.sCu 308 show that Ca doping of Pb 2 Sr2CeCu 308 causes a partial oxidation of Ce. Analysis within the framework of the Anderson single-impurity model yields an f electron occupation of 0.5 in Pb2Sr2Ceo.sCao.sCu30 s. The partial oxidation of Ce in Pb2Sr2Ceo.sCao.sCu30 s prevents the formation of electron holes in the CuO 2 layers and thereby explains the lack of superconductivity in this compound. The XANES spectra of the Pr and Tb containing compounds show that the rare-earth ions in these compounds are trivalent and that no oxidation of the rare-earth ions is induced by Ca doping.
