The absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of iodine in the gas phase was recorded over the wavelength range 1950-1780 A. The strong hlCD signal reveals the existence of at least one excited state which is not observed in the absorption measuremenrs. The assignment of this state is discu
