The absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of iodine in the gas phase was recorded over the wavelength range 1950-1780
A. The strong hlCD signal reveals the existence of at least one excited state which is not observed in the absorption measuremenrs.
The assignment of this state is discussed in the light of hlCD selection rules.
