✦ Synopsis

Na 2 M Si 4 O 10 (M ‫؍‬ Co, Ni) compounds have been obtained by annealing at 700Β°C a xerogel prepared from silicon and sodium ethoxides and M nitrate. Both silicates appear to be isostructural with the corresponding copper phase, with the presence of silicate pipes built up from (Si 8 O 20 ) 8؊ units. The M cations define isolated (M 2 O 8 ) 4؊ dimers from two edge-sharing square pyramids with M-M distances of around 3.17 A > . The magnetic properties have been analyzed as the presence of ferromagnetic interactions inside the dimers and antiferromagnetic interactions between the dimers at low temperature.

A magnetic study has been carried out on the transition metal intercalated vanadyl phosphates M (VOPO 4 ) 2 β€’ 4H 2 O (M ‫؍‬ Co 2Ψ‰ , Ni 2Ψ‰ ), which contain linear trimers of V‫؍‬O-M-O‫؍‬V between the layers. Ferromagnetic interactions have been found to be mediated through these linear trimers.
