✦ Synopsis

Low temperature specific heats have been measured in the temperature range 1.6-25 K on both amorphous and crystalline Er,00_xRux (20 ~< x <~ 40) alloys. We can identify the observed specific heat anomalies in crystalline and amorphous alloys as arising from magnetic ordering into the antiferromagnetic and spin-glass states respectively by analysing the temperature dependences of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity. Judging from an overall temperature dependence of the volmetric specific heat in the range below 25 K, we suggest that both amorphous and crystalline Er-Ru alloys containing 20-25 at.% Ru are potentially superior to Pb or even Er3Ni currently used as a regenerator material in a gas-cycle refrigerator.

The specific heat of polycrystalline Er x Y 1Àx (where x 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, and 0.10) has been investigated in the temperature range 2 to 50 K. The magnetic contributions to the specific heat have been obtained by subtracting the specific heat of the pure Y sample from the total specific heat of e
