✦ Synopsis

The specific heat of polycrystalline Er x Y 1Àx (where x 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, and 0.10) has been investigated in the temperature range 2 to 50 K. The magnetic contributions to the specific heat have been obtained by subtracting the specific heat of the pure Y sample from the total specific heat of each alloy. The magnetic specific heat of each alloy exhibits sharp maxima followed by quite broad anomalies centered at about 23 K. These anomalies have been attributed to the antiferromagnetic phase transition and the Schottky effect, which arises from the repopulation of the crystal field levels.
