✦ Synopsis
Temperature dependence of the yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and ultimate elongation to fracture of Cu--Nb bimetal after different thermomechanical treatments, and of niobium etched out of the bimetal have been studied in the temperature range 4.2-295 K. Fracture characteristics were investigated by means of optical and scanning electron microscopy. In the bimetal the niobium plastic deformation was shown to be determined by the supporting power of copper. Transition to the superconducting state in niobium has no essential effect on the bimetal mechanical characteristics.
