✦ Synopsis

The addition of small concentrations of beryllium to Cu-AI alloy close to the eutectoidal composition leads to a sharp decrease in the martensitic transformation temperature, while the composition corresponding to the maximum stability of the/3 phase does not change significantly. The eutectoidal temperature is lowered, but the temperature of t3 solution treatment remains the same. Moreover, there is no change in the nature of the martensitic transformation (DOs # 18R). All these properties are very interesting from the industrial point of view: whatever value M s ("martensite start") temperature is chosen, the stability of the 13 phase is approximately the same since the alloy is always close to the eutectoidal composition. This alloy is therefore a good complement of Cu-AI-Ni alloy for low transformation temperatures (below room temperature) with approximately the same resistance to ageing. Both one way and two way memory effect (TWME) experiments were carried out on the specimens.

Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloys with 10-14.5 wt.% of Al and 0-10 wt.% of Mn, were chosen for the present study. The transformation temperatures, shape memory effect and superelasticity of these alloys are highly sensitive to variations in composition. The influence of composition on these properties ha
