Abstract
The effect of major low‐latitude volcanic eruptions on the all‐India mean surface‐air temperature has been studied using data for the period 1899–1985, by using superposed epoch analysis over 36 months before and after the month of eruption. The eruptions are grouped into three categories and their effects on monthly temperatures are presented. In general, there is no evidence of persistent decrease in the mean annual temperature following the eruptions. There is, however, an abrupt and significant surface cooling over India in the first 2 months following northern hemispheric eruptions, with recurrent drops in the next 2–3 years. Southern hemispheric eruptions do not show any effect on the Indian surface temperatures.
