โœฆ Synopsis

Sensor head gasket aids engine efficiency

Freudenberg Dichtungs-und Schwingungstechnik has developed a new spring-less radial shaft seal, known as the energy-saving Simmerring (ESS).

This seal has a special elastomer compound and a completely new design to provide reliable operation without a spring, and offers a power reduction of 50 W. In traditional radial shaft seals the spring is responsible for assisting the creation of the contact pressure force to keep the sealing lip on the shaft surface. This ensures long-term sealing.

The new seal has been developed to keep friction to a minimum, and simultaneously to optimize the function of the seal. In this seal, the radial force remains stable at a low level over a broad speed range, even as the temperature in the joint gap rises. This was made possible by the development of a special elastomer compound and a completely new design.

The friction can be reduced by up to 50 W for a 45 mm diameter shaft at 6000 rev/min, which permits the seal to make a contribution to the reduction of power input in vehicles. A particular target is the engines in hybrid concepts.
