โœฆ Synopsis

Low frequency Raman spectra of glasses of the types (BaO), * (B203)1-I and (BaCl,),. -[(BaO), -(B,Os),_,_,]t_, have been reported. The temperature reduced Raman spectra show peaks at 67, 116 and 14Ocm-' for the binary glass. The bands at 116 and 14Ocn-' are ascribed to the librational motions of the borate groups and the 67 cm-' band arises because of the limited structural correlation range (SCR) of the glass network, causing a maximum of the frequency dependent Raman coupling coefficient. Due to addition of BaO in v-B&, the oxygens are mostly incorporated in the formation of BO, units; however large Ba*+ ions also enhance the number of non-bridging oxygens at higher concentrations of dopant. These barium ions as well as chlorine ions are accomodated in the interstitial vacancies of the glass network which leads to an expansion of the network structure.

Solid solutions in the ternary system ZrOz-CeO 2 Y203, by virtue of their high-temperature stability and good electrical conductivity, have potential application in many advanced technologies such as the magnetohydrodynamic ( MHD ) generator. The investigations reported here include studies on the s
