โœฆ Synopsis

The anisotropy of oriented liquid crystals wmpticates the interpretation of dielectric measurements in terms of molecular properties. This paper uses a simple lattice model to describe the anisotropic local electric field in oriented nematic liquid crystals. and shows that for a particular orientation of molecular axes the dielectric anisotropy may be positive or negative, depending on the mean permittivity. The direction of orientation of nematogens in Iow kequency electric tieIds may be explained in terms of !ocal field effects rather *Aan invoking the presence of conducting impurities. It is well known [I] that nematic liquid crystals may be oriented by magnetic fields with the long axes

Static and dynamic effects of a fast bistable device containing a ferroelectric liquid crystal are investigated theoretically. The switching mechanisms are different a t low and high electric fields. There is a critical voltage which separates a bulk switching regime from the regime of domain wall m
