✦ Synopsis

A novel polyurethane iniferter synthesized from 1,1,2,2-tetraphenyl-1,2ethane diol and toluene diisocyanate has been used to polymerize styrene through a "livingÏ radical mechanism. A rate equation (R p P [styrene]1Õ1 [polyurethane iniferter]0Õ93) and overall activation energy (E a \ 99 kJ mol~1) have been deduced from the kinetic results. The molecular weight of the polystyrene increased with increasing polymerization time and conversion. When the polystyrene was post-polymerized in the presence of styrene and methyl methacrylate, a high molecular weight polystyrene and polystyreneÈpoly(methyl methacrylate) block copolymer were obtained, respectively.

Synthesis of poly(styrene-b-tetrahydrofuran (THF)-b-styrene) triblock copolymers was performed by transformation from living cationic into living radical polymerization, using 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (4-hydroxy-TEMPO) as a transforming agent. Sodium 4-oxy-TEMPO, derived from 4
