β¦ Synopsis
An expenmental mvestigatlon of flmd flow m extremely small channels 1s presented Potential apphcatlons for such channels include cooling of electronic arcmts, and reactors for mod&&ion and separation of blolo@cal cells The immediate goal IS to determine at what length scales the contmuum assumptions break down and if the Navler-Stokes equations adequately predict fled behavior In order to accomplish this, expenments are being conducted m progressively thinner flow channels We have constructed three channels of rectangular cross-section ranging in area from 7200 to 80 square nucrons, utihzmg the recent advances m nucrofabncatlon
In this paper, prehmmary results are reported pertammg to fnctlon measurements It 1s found that m the relatively large flow channels the expenmental observations are m rough agreement with the predictions from the Navler-Stokes equations However, m the smallest of the channels, there 1s a significant deviation from the Namer-Stokes predlctlons
