✦ Synopsis

A calibrated finite clement technique, previously described by the author, is used to study the effect of orthotropic material properties on computed values of the stress intensity factor. For sufficiently long notched specimens in tension, bending and shear, the effect of otthotropy is negligible but it may become appreciable for shorter lengths. It is also found that orthotropic properties have a large infiuence on the stress intensity factors for a cleavage specimen.

Ahatr&--The behaviour of cracks in rock due to drag bit cutting is modelled using fracture mechanics principles based on a displacement discontinuity method. A realistic representation of a stress singularity at a crack tip is achieved using a special crack tip element with r In displacement variati
