โฆ Synopsis
Recently we developed a formal rate law for non-faradaic electrode reactions 1. We noted that by adopting a formalism essentially the same as that proposed by Delahay for the treatment of faradaic processes 2 this rate law could provide a description of the results to be expected on application of small amplitude relaxation techniques. At the same time we voiced our reservations concerning the feasibility of applying such a description to the analysis of experimental data. Nonetheless we examine this matter in more detail in the present work. Our interest stems in part from the hope that our reservations may be unduly pessimistic, but in large measure it originates in the fact that the descriptions of faradaic and non-faradaic processes are very similar. Thus, the present work may provide some indirect insight into the behavior of faradaic reactions as well as the non-faradaic reactions with which it deals directly.
