✦ Synopsis
A study of the linear dichroism and fluorescence polarization of diphenylpolyenes (CeHs -(CLi=CH)]r-Cells) wirh II = 1.2, X.4.6. 8 in stretched polyethylene films sho\vs tllat the polyencs orient in the anisotropic matris with their Iransition dipole (emission and absorption, n + IT*) aligned with tltc direction of stretch. The masimum dichroic tatio is observed for 1.6diphcnyl-1.3,5-hcsatricnc (DPH). with n = 3, whcrcas 111e values are substantially lower for II < 3 or rr > 3. The hi& orientation of DPH and poor alignment of the hi&r polycnes may be accounted for in ternls of the growing flexibility of the polyene chains with increasin, n chain length. The results justify the use of DPH as a convenient fluorescence probe for biological und synthetic membranes.
