## Abstract Presupposing exponentially decaying states (with phenomenological lifetimes) of the particle system interacting with the radiation field, the shape and width of Raman lines is discussed on a quantum‐mechanical basis for the most important types of excitation: non‐resonance, pre‐resonanc
