Analyses are made for predicting fatigue limit of notches with and without the effect of compressive residual stresses. The residual stresses are introduced by shot peening or surface rolling, and detected by X-ray diffraction technique. The theoretical work is based on the local stress method and f

โฆ Synopsis
A comparison is made between elastic-plastic, and linear-elastic, fracture mechanics parameters, for notch fatigue problems. It is shown that in high-strength aluminium alloy 2024T351, at normal working stress levels, the errors involved in using LEFM for any crack detectable during nondestructive testing, is likely to be small.
The applicability of the method to structural steels is also discussed, and some problems identified.
