✦ Synopsis


The light microscopic evaluation of the peripheral blood is an important laboratory test used daily in every hospital to evalulate the state of health of patients. A drop of blood is smeared on a glass slide, air dried and stained with a polychromatic staining procedure which was devised at the turn of the century by Wright. This simple technique yields valuable information about the status of the red-blood cells, (erythrocytes) the various white blood cells (leukocytes) and even elements of the clotting system (platelets) (Figure 1).
