The A' 'Z: state of N2 was detected for the first time in a direct measurement, using a high-resolution laser absorption technique within the C" 'lI. +A' 'Z: (u' =O+Y" =O) band. Evidence is given that the quintet state was created by means of an energy pooling reaction from the A '2: state in a pure

✦ Synopsis
A beam containing N2 in long-lived states was generated by means of a dc discharge at the nozzle. One of the metastable beam components was Nr (A' 'Z: ). This species was detected by means of pulsed laser excitation in the Nl(C" %,+A' 'C: ) 2-1 band, followed by 2-O band fluorescence. The lifetime of the c", v=2 level was measured to be 4.73f 0.1 ps.
