β¦ Synopsis
Experimental studies were carried out on buoyancy-induced flows in a differentially heated air filled square enclosure at the high Rayleigh number range of 1 Γ 109-4 X 109. Velocity profiles were obtained using a laser-Doppler velocimeter. Turbulence intensities are presented. The vertical temperature distribution in the core was measured by traversing a thermocouple probe. Core stratification was found to have a profound influence on the regimes and characteristics of the flow.
