Polyelectrolyte multilayers prepared by the layer-by-layer technique provide an efficient way to generate planar structures of tailored surface charge and hydrophobicity, which are used as membranes for pervaporation. The use of polyelectrolyte multilayers to form the membrane permits tailoring the
