A new mechwusm for desorption induced by an infrared laser is proposed An internal vibration of the adsorbate is excited by the laser and its energy uansferred to the desorption mode -an adsorbate-surface bond. Tlus mode coupbng wth surface phonons bgomes unstable. Such Instability leads to rupture of the adsorbate-surface bond. Estimates show that this mahanism may be quite efficient_
