โฆ Synopsis
The fluorescence behaviour of 4-N,N-dimethylaminomethylbenzoate has been studied in pure non-polar solvents, mixed nonpolar solvents and polar/non-polar solvent mixtures; the behaviour of 4-N,Ndimethylaminoethyl benzoate has been investigated in pure non-polar solvents. No evidence for any red-shifted a* emission was found in non-polar solvents at room temperature. In mixed polar/non-polar solvents complete decay kinetics were found that were inconsistent with a simple excited-state b* H a* equilibrium. Red-shifted emission was observed from a supersonic expansion of these compounds; however this red-shifted emission is attributed to ground-state dimers undergoing reorganisation upon electronic excitation to give excimeric emission in contrast to an earlier assignment. The formation of excimers is supported by observation of excimeric emission at high ( 1W3 M) concentrations in non-polar solvents.
