Vibrational energy transfer rates in HCl-C02. HCl-HI. and HI-CO2 mktures have been measured by laser-excited vibrational fluorescence. COO laser action was produced by adding CO2 to the Cl. -HI c chemical laser.

โฆ Synopsis
An excitation spectrum of CO+ (X *S + A * ll) fluorescence hds been obtamcd using a tun.lblc dye laser. Sclcctiw lawr excitation and fluorescence detectlon ywlds information on the 1011's vibrational relaxation. Molecular ions arc highly reactive species and have under normal circumstances very short lifetimes. They are therefore hard to prepare in high concentrations and their spectroscopy presents a challenging problem. Laser induced fluoresccncc methods have been recently shown to be extremely useful in studying low concentrations of free radicals and other trace contaminants. Application of similar laser fluorescence techniques to the study of molecular ions would provide, besides the intrinsic interest in the spectroscopy of ions, valuable
