โœฆ Synopsis

The decomposition of 1-chloro-1,l-difluoroethane by a radical chain reaction has been studied in a flow reactor in the temperature range from 503 to 773 K. For the initiation of the chain small amounts of added chlorine were photolyzed with a XeCl laser (A = 308 nm). The formation of the dehydrochlorination and chlorination products, vinylidene fluoride, and 1,2-dichloro-l,l-difluoroethane respectively, is described by a kinetic model. Arrhenius parameters for the two abstraction reactions Ct + CH,CClF, -% HCl + CH2CCIF2 and C1 + CHpCICCIFz 3 HCl + CHClCC1F2 were determined by a competition method: log,,(k,/cm3 mol-'s 'J = (13.6 t 0.1) -(9200 2 300)/4.5762' log,,(k,jcm3 mol-' s-') = (13.7 ? 0.1) -(6500 _t 200)/4.576T

Experimental and modeling results are discussed with respect to former studies on the thermal reaction of 1-chloro-1,l-difluoroethane.

A new insight into the contested origin of the absence of radical reaction in the pyrolysis of CF 2 ClCH 3 is given. This chain reaction would be too slow compared with the molecular reaction because of a too slow homogeneous initiation leading to a too fast wall recombination of the Cl atom chain c
