An account is given of the inhibition kinetic examination of some aromatic hydrocarbons which act as retarders for the polymerization of vinyl acetate. The dependence of the reactivity on parameters characterizing the structure of aromatic hydrocarbons is discussed in detail. It is shown that the aromatic molecules are attacked by radicals not only at the points of maximum reactivity but also, with appropriately reduced probability, at their less reactive points. In calculating theoretical values of the reactivity and the stoichiometric coefficient, these facts have been taken into account. The activation energy of elementary inhibition reactions is also discussed. It is shown that only a small part of the modification of reactivity can be ascribed to changes in activation energy; modification of the pre-exponential factor is of much greater significance. Consequently, radical reactions of aromatic hydrocarbons cannot be directly interpreted according to Polanyi's rule.
