β¦ Synopsis
The electrochemical reduction of dissolved oxygen at pre-oxidized and pre~reduced metal electrodes has been studied using the galvanostatic and chronopotentiometric methods. Oxygen reduction at pre-oxidized electrodes occurs by a pH-dependent mechanism that gives water as the reduction product. With pre-reduced electrodes in acidic solutions, oxygen is reduced to hydrogen peroxide by a pH-independent mechanism. The kinetic parameters for these two mechanisms have been determined at platinum, palladium and silver electrodes.

By considering published data on the kinetics of the oxygen electrode at a platinum surface it is suggested that the electrode process follows the same path in both acid and alkaline solution. This path is identified, and attention is drawn to certain restrictions on the use of diagnostic criteria.
Two diametrically different pH dependences have been reported for oxygen reduction at prereduced Pt electrodes. In the current density (cd) region with the Tafel slope of -2.3RT/F, the pH dependence expressed as dE/dpH is, according to one group of workers, -90 mV, ie -3 x 2.3 RT/(2F) and -30 mV, ie
