Abstract

The kinetics of initial steps of formation of polyetherols in the reaction between melamine and ethylene carbonate in dimethylsulfoxide in presence of 1,4‐diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) as catalyst was studied. Based upon kinetic studies performed with various concentrations of melamine and catalyst, the rate law was formulated and a mechanism of the reaction was proposed. The activation parameters ΔG^#,^ ΔH^#^, and ΔS^#^ were obtained from the temperature dependence of kinetics. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 93: 294–300, 2004

Polyetherols containing s-triazine rings can be obtained in reactions of oxiranes with melamine derivatives. A report on the attempt to replace pentakis(methoxymethyl)melamine with bis(methoxymethyl)melamine in the synthesis is presented. The replacement simplified the procedure by eliminating the s

## Abstract The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction between isocyanuric acid and ethylene carbonate was studied. The multistep reaction in the presence of potassium carbonate as catalyst leads to polyetherols. The imide and hydroxyl groups of intermediates react with ethylene carbonate by slight
