Kinetics of heterogeneous oxidation of starch with hypochlorite were studied under varying conditions of temperature, pH, buffer components, buffer concentration, and concentration of substrate and oxidant. The kinetic data show that the reaction is first order with respect to hypochlorite. A plot o

✦ Synopsis
The kinetics of oxidation of hypochlorite ions on a platinum electrode in chloride free solutions, 1 M in KF, at pH 12, have been studied. Double-ring rotating electrode has been used to record both the steady-state polarisation curves (inner ring) and diffusion-limiting currents of reduction of reaction products and intermediates (outer ring). The results indicate that the basic oxidation step is that of removal of a single electron from OCI-ion with the formation of OCI radical. The latter undergoes further chemical reactions in the bulk ohase until the overall reaction of chlorate formation defineh by Foerster is accomplished.
