โฆ Synopsis
The kinetics of dimerization of arylmercurials XCeH4HgCl (X = H, p-CH3, rn-CH3, p-C1, m-OCH3, rn-COzCzH5, and o-OCH~) in the presence of [ClRh(C0)212 was studied in hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA). The experimental rate law obtained is -d[ArHgCll/dt = k[ArHgC1I2. The kinetic parameters of these reactions have been reported, and the variation, therein, has been explained on the basis of steric effect of substituents. The apparent activation energy E is linearly proportional to pre-exponential factor 1nA. A most plausible mechanism has been proposed on the basis of experimental results.

The kinetics and mechanism of racemization of allantoin have been examined; racemization proceeds via two independent pathways that can be separately monitored. One pathway involves proton exchange at C5 with solvent. The other pathway occurs via intramolecular attack of N8 on C4 to form a symmetric
