✦ Synopsis

The oxidation of propane over V/AIPO4 with vanadium concentrations ranging from 0.2-15 wt.-% was investigated with regard to the dependence on temperature and partial pressures of oxygen and propane. Main products are propene and carbon oxides, while formation of C2-hydrocarbons, mainly ethene, occurs over support sites. At low vanadium concentrations, 0.2-2 wt.-%, the selectivity for propene and ethene increased with reaction temperature, while at high vanadium concentration, 6-15 wt.-%, it decreased with increasing temperature. An increase in the propane partial pressure or a decrease in the oxygen partial pressure favors propene and ethene formation. The kinetic analysis of the partial pressure dependencies of propane oxidation showed that for each an expression like k'P/ ( 1 + KP) was adequate. A Rideal type of rate equation gave a good description of the combined data. Both the propane and the oxygen adsorption constants varied with the vanadium concentration. The main effects were that the propane adsorption strongly decreased up to 6 wt.-% V, while the oxygen adsorption increased. Between 6 and 15 wt.-% V the effects are opposite but smaller. The analysis of the formation of propene showed the same oxygen dependence as above, but the propane dependence was of first order, except at the lowest vanadium concentration. Thus, the Rideal type of rate equation was adequate for describing the formation of propene, but the propane adsorption constant was almost zero at 0.5-15 wt.-% V. The oxygen adsorption constant varies as for propane oxidation, but it is much larger.
