β¦ Synopsis
Radical polymerization of dicyclohexyl fumarate (DCHF) initiated with dimethyl 2,2'-azobisisobutyrate (MAIB) or 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) at 60 Β° was studied kinetically. The polymerization rate (Rp) initiated with MAIB was greater than that with AIBN, in spite of the similar decomposition rates of the initiators. It was also found that the kinetic orders for DCHF and initiator were quite different for polymerizations with the two initiators. In polymerization with MAIB, the kinetic order for DCHF (m) was 1.7, reduced to 1.3 by correction of Rp for the viscosity of the polymerization medium; polymerization with AIBN gave a larger m-value (2.8). The kinetic orders with respect to initiators were 0.56 and 0.26 for MAIB and AIBN, respectively. These results indicate that DCHF polymerization is greatly affected by the reactivity of primary radicals from initiator and the viscosity of the medium.
