There are many environmental problems worthy of forecasting. For example, one might wish to determine the changes that would occur in a lake ecological system as a result of a ban on the discharge of a polluting substance, or assess the reversibility of the effects of acid rain, speculate about futu

โฆ Synopsis
This supplement contains the eight-year chronological list of abstracts and cumulative index for authors, keywords and titles. In its commitment to providing a focal publication for significant contributions in forecasting research, this supplement further serves the needs of researchers seeking to review developments in their areas. The Journal of Forecasting is interdisciplinary in its methodology and contributions to time-series analysis, econometrics, judgemental inference, decision theory and systems modelling are represented, together with application areas in business, engineering, economics and the environment. Editors have endeavoured to publish papers which provide important results in their respective fields and become sources of references for subsequent researchers.
In passing through its eighth year, the Journal acknowledges two terms of editorial duties. The JournaI's debt to its founding editors, Spyros Makridakis, Scott Armstrong, Robert Fildes and Bob Carbone is fundamental. With their energies, the first four years of the journal were remarkable in securing an unusually fast growth in research status, citations and readership. During the second four-year term, our departmental organisation with Johannes Ledolter and Peter Young in Time-Series and Systems, Sean Holly and Peter Pauly in Econometrics, Lee Beach and Larry Phillips in Judgeniental emphasised our policy of studying methodology and this has succeeded well. Volume 9, next year, is expanded from four to five issues. In going into our next term, half of our departmental editors have joined the Board of Associate Editors, viz Johannes Ledolter, Lee Beach and Larry Phillips, and are replaced by Robert Shumway, Russ Ferrell and Jim Smith.
In addition to two generations of editors, the Journal takes this opportunity to acknowledge the continuing support of associate editors and numerous referees. In a decade of proliferating journals and increasing research output in this topic, the professional demands on reviewers are enormous, yet it is their input which essentially controls the quality of any refereed journal.
