✦ Synopsis

Perhaps it was fortuitous that, while reading this book on a train journey, the Reviewer dropped asleep--but perhaps not! As exciting research areas, both ion exchange and solvent extraction have apparently passed their peak, which roughly coincided with the palmy days of the uranium boom for atomic energy. While both remain thoroughly viable-indeed, multimillion pound solvent-extraction plants for copper are now going up--for the moment the cream has been skimmed and current research seems humdrum. Meanwhile, it has been found expedient to combine the two "advances" series into one. Fundamentally, they have much in common.

The present slim volume reviews Extraction of metals by carboxylic acids (D. S. Flett and M. J. Jaycock), Solvent extraction with sulfonic acids (G. Y. Markovits and G. R. Choppin), Nuclear magnetic resonance studies of organophosphorus extractants (W. E. Stewart and T. H. Siddall) and Experience with the AKUFVE solvent extraction equipment (J. Rydberg, H. Reinhardt and J. O. Liljenzin). These are all competent records of the current status of their topics. "AKUFVE", by the way, is an automated laboratory apparatus for investigating distribution factors in solvent extraction.

The book is nicely produced, but expensive.

For the second of this "Series of Advances", the net has been spread rather wide, for as well as quite "classical" topics (notably, Synthesis of ion-exchange resins by R. M. Wheaton and M. J. Hatch and Interactions between organic ions and ionexchange resins by J. Feitelson), the present volume incl
