โฆ Synopsis
Flash vacuum pyrolysis of furoxans generates nitrile oxides, which have been reacted with alkenes to yield Z-isoxazolines, and have been examined by 'H and 13 C nmr spectroscopy.

Original dehydrating reagents for the efficient formation of nitrile oxides from primary nitro compounds are reported. Burgess salt, DAST, acetic anhydride and oxalyl chloride were shown to be useful reagents to perform this transformation.
The mean As-0 distance is 1.70 8, in the As04 tetrahedron and 1.82 A in the As06 octahedron; the mean As-0-As bond angle at the bridging oxygen atom is 127", and the angle between the octahedral plane and octahedral diagonal is 87 'I. The length of each hydrogen bond (5 per unit cell) is between 2.5
1,2,4-Oxadiazole-4-oxides undergo clean thermal cleavage in refluxing chlorobenzene or xylene to nitriles and nitrosocarbonyl intermediates, which are either trapped with suitable olefins to afford ene adducts or dimerize and rearrange to anhydrides.
