โœฆ Synopsis

In this respect, we note that other work in these laboratories has shown that the heavy oil and asphaltenes will afford increased yields of hydrocarbon gases together with a more aliphatic oil when tetralin is used as a reaction medium; a reaction by-product is naphthalene. Similar results were previously obtained by Boomer and Edwards" who investigated the destructive distillation of the bitumen per se in tetralin. In fact, it has been noted in the petroleum industry that cracking of a feedstock in the presence of a hydrogendonor diluent leads to increased gasoline and middledistillate yields whilst the higher-boiling fuel-oil yields are decreased over those recorded for conventional visbreaking".

It would seem therefore that, under the conditions described herein, the ability of the bitumen to produce desirable products depends not only on the amount, and pressure, of the gaseous hydrogen present at any one time but also, and perhaps more significantly, on the ability of certain structural entities to react with the hydrogen and act as hydrogen donors within the system.

The relationship between floatability and electrokinetic potential has been widely used, mainly for judging the behaviour of reagents 6,7 In this study, the electrokinetic . potential was obtained from the electrophoretic mobility of fine coal particles floating in a slurry with distilled water. The
